How is low testosterone diagnosed?
- Having low testosterone is diagnosed by taking a blood test prior to starting treatment. Other tests may by ordered to determine the cause.
What are the causes?
Prior to starting patients on testosterone replacement therapy, it is vital for the physician to rule out other reversible causes:
- Obesity
- Active illness
- Medication use
- Sleep apnea
- Other hormonal imbalance
- Excessive exercise
- Nutrient deficiencies
Treatment options?
- Injections
- Transdermal gels
- Nasal gels
- Biodentical pellets
Will it affect my fertility?
- A surprise to many patients, testosterone replacement can lead to infertility in most cases. For these patients we can use (off-label) optimization using medications like Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG), selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), or aromatase inhibitors.
